I pick whichever machine is open. ;-)

If you are trying to maintain your aerobic fitness, then select whichever machine that will keep you motivated. That might mean that you alternate between the two. And to maintain base aerobic fitness, it's best to go longer -- try for closer to 60 minutes if you can.

And don't believe the calorie count given by those machines. They are notoriously inaccurate.
References :
i'm a competitive swimmer too! high five :) ok so anyways, i usually swim 6 times a week, so its pretty hard on my joints, so i like using the elliptical machine. i think 10 minutes on a running machine is good, cuz it trains your breathing mostly, and is good if ur training for short distances.
References :
I'd say treadmills are better in helping you burn fat faster since they're closer to the real deal. It raises your heart rate faster to the fat burning
rate so running to burn 600 calories will be more effective on the treadmill than on the elliptical.

However, you'll probably find an elliptical a lot more motivating to use as they feel easier. I have been using an elliptical frequently--about 3-5 times a week--and I've noticed plenty of progress. My body feels pretty slim these days.

As for muscles from using an elliptical or treadmill, I'd say that it is not something you need to worry about. Just don't strength train with weights and you won't get any "muscly."
References :
Ellipticals are always easier on your joints, so I would recommend that, even if it means having to go for a bit longer to get the same workout.
References :
As long as you eat to only satisfy your hunger and don't eat to be fool. Just because you have a whole plate of food in front of you, don't feel obligated to eat the whole thing at one time, just set aside the rest for later. Its all about control. And exercises is definitely a plus.
References :
It is possible. There is only one main fact in losing weight - if you burn more calories than you ingest, you will lose weight. There are a couple of things that clarify that some, such as muscle weighs more than fat (so it is common to gain muscle weight and lose fat weight at the same time), and there are more calories in high fat foods (beef) than foods with high protein (fish - fowl). Basically take in as little fat and sugar (simple carbohydrates) as possible, concentrate on complex carbohydrates (veggies/fiber) and protein (fish and fowl). Drink plenty of water. Get your rest. Exercise aerobically (elliptical is great!) as much as you can stand. You'll lose weight and become more fit.
Edit: I feel compelled to add this - dieting and eating are the same thing. Dieting is simply choosing what foods (and the quantity) you are, and are not, going to eat - you do not have the option of not eating. Exercising reduces appetite, counter intuitively.
References :
I did that "Diet" a few years ago. In the beginning it was really hard work to stay on there for 45 mins, but my tolerance grew. I found my body being able to down whole bottles of water, even when I wasn't working out, and I was able to go up a flight of stairs without my heart racing. I don't think I lost too much weight but I do remember feeling so much stronger and healthier. If you go this route without dieting, you will probably eventually notice weight loss, but your energy level/ strength will definitely increase much faster. Just don't gorge yourself on junk food and drink more water than you usually do. Good Luck!
